Primary care is central to any healthcare system and primary care practitioners play a key role in the delivery of respiratory care, with respiratory symptoms being the most common reason for primary care consultations.
The majority of respiratory diagnoses are carried out by primary care practitioners and the management of people with respiratory conditions–especially asthma, COPD and acute infections–is predominantly the responsibility of primary care. This responsibility extends from prevention to both long-term and acute management, as well as supportive care of very severe disease.

Hilary Pinnock is Head of the ERS General Pneumology Assembly.
She is Professor of Primary Care Respiratory Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and leads a programme of work in the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research.
A practising primary care doctor, her research interests focus on the delivery of respiratory care within the real-life primary care setting.
A: Inspiration, ideas, information, impact! There is an exciting range of symposia and speaker sessions, many on conditions that we manage in primary care, but don’t forget to also look at the e-posters. I find poster sessions are a good way to hear about how other people are solving the problems that we all face in clinical practice, as well as being a good way to meet people and network. Arrangements are different this year, but the abstract authors will be uploading brief commentaries about their poster and you will be able to leave comments and enjoy virtual conversations.
A: Firstly, the two primary care sessions, Part I (Tuesday 8 September, 10:40–11:40 CEST) on breathlessness and smoking cessation and Part II (Tuesday 8 September, 11:50–12:50 CEST) on multimorbidity and airways disease in pregnancy. Secondly, the 'Diagnosis and management of airways disease in primary care' (Monday 7 September, 15:40–16:40 CEST) oral presentations from primary care around the world, covering topics as diverse as the impact of different types of spacers, asthma in people with limited health literacy, lung function and burden of disease, and acute asthma. Finally, the symposium ‘Digital health: a brave new world?’ (Wednesday 9 September, 11:50–12:50 CEST), which includes discussion on digital technologies and artificial intelligence for the monitoring of asthma, a patients’ view of connected health, and the challenge of e-health literacy. This should be a thought-provoking session!
